Tereya's Prom Story: Preparing For The Big Day

It's Prom Season
Tereya decided in junior year that she was not going to her senior prom. In fact she was adamant about not attending senior prom. It was not a topic for discussion in our house. However, when senior year began all that changed. Needless to say, I was ecstatic. She participated in all of the senior activities and get this, she actually enjoyed it. As the months past, we were hunting for the perfect prom dress, after party outfit and vehicle.

She new she wanted a mermaid style prom dress. Every weekend for four months straight, we went to boutiques and local dress stores. Tereya tried on several dresses. Unfortunately, she did not find a dress that she liked or loved. Our next option was to get her dress made. However, my daughter whom I love dearly suggested we go to Macy's. So off to Macy's we went.

While at this department store, Tereya tried on dress after dress and she did not like any of them. It appeared this trip was an epic fail. As we prepared to leave, a dress caught her eye and she began to smile. Something she had not done since we started shopping for dresses months earlier. Happily, I told her to try on the dress. As I waited for her to exit the fitting room, I began to think "this could be the one". When she exited the room there was a glow in her eye and she was smiling from ear to ear. I knew at that moment she found her prom dress. As a result of the dresses plunging neckline, we needed to focus on the undergarments as they as just as important as the dress.

While at Macy's we went to the lingerie department to look at some brassiere's and shape-wear. Thankfully, this process was painless and we were able to find the perfect brassiere and tummy control undergarment. Before we left the store, Tereya wanted to visit the shoe department to look for a nude strappy shoe. She saw a nude sandal named Stecy Two Piece Sandal by Steve Madden. Unfortunately, the shoe was not available in her size. However, she was able to find a nude sandal at the Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW). Keep reading to see Tereya's final look for prom and the afterparty.

Twerk A Book....Make Them Pages Clap

Don't twerk something, read something. It is estimated that school summer breaks will cause the average student to lose up to one month of instruction, with disadvantaged students being disproportionately affected (Cooper, 1996). Hence, why it is important to read during the summer. Summer reading help our childrem retain and enhance their there reading skills. It also helps to magnify their cognitive skills. These skills include,  communication (writing and verbal)  attention, memory, logic, reasoning, auditory processing and visual processing which are all critical for learning. As parents we are our children's first educators and it is important to stress the importance of education. We must encourage our children to read throughout the summer. During the school year our children are required to read every day and night for a certain time during a certain time. I believe we should continue that process during the summer. However, the process should be relaxed. Allow t...

A Prayer for My Brown Girls

One of my prayers for my daughter's is that God continues to guide them as they navigate through life. I pray that they will be surrounded by and interact with like minded individuals. I pray they really know and understand that the decisions they make today not only will have impact today or tomorrow but also in the future. I pray that God continues to open doors, the right doors for them as well as close the wrong ones.  I ask God to protect them from anyone who seeks to do harm unto them. Protect them for hurt, harm  and dangers known and unknown. I pray that they always put their faith and trust in him. Continue to strive for greatness and do their best in all that they do.  “When you have faith in God, you don’t have to worry about the future. You just know it’s all in His hands. You just go to and do your best.” -unknown

My Browngirl Is Graduating From College Today

Screaming Congratulations!!! Today is Tereya's big day. She is graduating from Brooklyn College. Tereya has accomplished so much. I am so proud of her and the young lady she has become. She did not have the opportunity to take her graduation pictures, nor did she have a traditional graduation ceremony today.  We were not able to schedule hair, nail and make up appointments. My plan is to have her do these things as well have her photos taken to commerate this accomplishment. The pandemic came in wreaking havoc on our lives. She had to complete her final semester of college remotely. It was a challenge, but she did not let that or Corona deter her. She held onto the goal and trusted the process. It was not easy, but it was worth it. Guess what Tinkerbell, YOU did it.  You have set the path for your only sister. You may get on each others nerves, but she looks up to you. Tereya you have fought through some bad days to earn the best days of you...
